Choosing a shuttlecock by country alone is unreliable. A city can have air-conditioned halls, humid coastal conditions, high altitude or large seasonal temperature changes. The final decision should use the actual indoor environment and a court test.

As a general rule, warmer air requires a slower speed grade and cooler air requires a faster grade. Higher altitude and lower air density can also make a shuttle travel farther, which may require adjustment.

Some markets use additional suffix systems. Confirm how the supplier labels speed before ordering.

This chart is a starting point, not a promise that one speed will work in every hall.

Why temperature changes shuttle flight

Air density and material condition change with the environment. In warmer conditions, the same shuttle may travel farther. In cooler conditions, it may feel slower. Natural feathers also react to moisture and storage, so two tubes marked with the same speed can perform differently if one was stored in very dry air.

How altitude affects speed

At higher altitude, lower air density produces less aerodynamic drag. A shuttle may travel farther than it does at sea level, even at the same room temperature. This is why a “speed by country” chart cannot replace local testing.

When buying for a high-altitude city, provide the supplier with:

  • city and approximate elevation;
  • usual indoor temperature range;
  • air-conditioning conditions;
  • current brand, model and speed;
  • whether current shuttles land short, correct or long.

How to test a shuttle for correct speed

The BWF Laws of Badminton describe a standardized method: use a full underhand stroke from over the back boundary line, striking the shuttle at an upward angle parallel to the side lines. A correctly paced shuttle should land within the specified markers near the opposite back boundary.

For club purchasing, improve repeatability:

  1. Use the same competent tester.
  2. Test several shuttles, not one exceptional piece.
  3. Record temperature and venue.
  4. Allow tubes to acclimatize to the hall.
  5. Compare adjacent speeds such as 76/77 or 77/78.
  6. Keep the approved model and speed as a reference sample.

Common problems and corrections

Speed 77 flies too far

Check temperature, altitude, storage and test technique. If conditions are warm or high-altitude, test speed 76 beside 77 before changing the full order.

The same speed feels different between halls

Air conditioning, hall volume, temperature, humidity and elevation can all contribute. Test at the venue where the shuttles will be used.

A sample speed is correct but the bulk batch differs

Record the approved sample standard in the order documents. For natural feather products, minor variation can occur; batch speed checks and pre-shipment inspection reduce risk.

Indoor clubs should plan for seasons

A club in a four-season market may require two adjacent speeds during the year. Rather than buying a single annual speed, track hall temperature monthly and review consumption. Mixed-speed bulk orders may be arranged; the current catalogue accepts mixed speeds for bulk orders, subject to confirming quantity and carton allocation.

Is speed 77 the standard shuttlecock speed?

It is commonly used around 21-28°C, but altitude and indoor conditions can make another speed more suitable.

Does humidity make a shuttle faster or slower?

Humidity can influence feather condition and consistency, but the combined result depends on temperature, storage and construction. Use a court test rather than assuming a fixed direction.

Should I select speed only by country?

No. Select by city, venue, indoor temperature, altitude and current test results.
